i love how you are stubborn and steadily claim that your car defies physics

A spoiler is an automotive aerodynamic device whose intended design function is to 'spoil' unfavorable air movement across a body of a vehicle in motion. Spoilers on the front of a vehicle are often called air dams, because in addition to directing air flow they also reduce the amount of air flowing underneath the vehicle which reduces aerodynamic lift. Spoilers are often fitted to race and high-performance sports cars, although they have become common on passenger vehicles as well. Some spoilers are added to cars primarily for styling purposes and have either little aerodynamic benefit or even make the aerodynamics worse.

Spoilers for cars are often incorrectly confused with, or the term used interchangeably with, wings. Automotive wings are devices whose intended design is to generate downforce as air passes around them, not simply disrupt existing airflow patterns.

Quote:
Q: At what seed do you have to travel for the downforce of the spoiler to actually benifit you?
A: about 90-100 mph

my own .02 cents on the matter
i believe you are a troll, trolling the site and causing this commotion for shits and giggles, because...i highly doubt that this great American nation would give you a drivers license and allow you to put people at risk if you truly are that mentally challenged

ps you have a Nissan 240sx, not a Delorian your car can not defy physics.....

Maybe your car does handle better with.the wing on it, but its almost certainly because you are driving differntly. It is in you head. In NO WAY is the wing applying enough downforce or lift to significantly alter the handling of the car in either a positive or negative way. That is what we are.saying to you. So stop using downforce as the reason for the "spoiler". That's it.

NO NO guys hes right....he apparently knows more then any1 here that actually drifts, grips,or 1/4's! (with something other then their daily) so let him rock his "MAGICAL" wing, welded diff, and stock wheels! WE ARE ALL STUPID for thinking any of us with actual track/high speed experiences knows what we could possibly be talking about.

I will bet you your wing does not generate 250# of downforce @ 30mph, much less anything that could do anything

Loser gives up daily driver to winner.

LMK. I could use the scrap money from your car to buy some toilet paper to wipe the crap off of your mouth you are spouting.

Hey mike ....

remember this?

I bet you do. Maybe a wing would have kept you from spinning out so much.

Nothing in that video was fast enough to see any real benefit of a wing, especially when the car is driving around at any sort of angle.

Its traumatizing to think about how unsafe it was without a wing though.

Your quote is about spoilers. This is true for spoilers, but not true for wings.

I'm just going to put this here for you guys to look at. It's useless to you unless you have wing profile data (NACA data). You can get the data online. Good luck getting data for a stock wing profile.

Downforce= .5ρA Cl V^2
.5 x air density x wing area x coefficient of lift x velocity (in feet per second) squared = downforce in lbs.

Coefficient of lift is derived from the wing profile data. It will also vary with the angle of attack. Air density is affected by the turbulence of the air flow.

A wing with an area of 3 square feet and a Cl of 1 would have about 75-80 lbs of downforce at a hundred miles an hour. That downforce has to overcome the car's lift (cars have some lift at speed.). With normal cars this is around 140-180 lbs of lift. (The downforce from the wing essentially eliminates that. F1 cars have produced enough downforce to theoretically drive upside down at 60 mph. Nobody here drives a formula car. We won't dwell on that.)

I cant believe this thread is still going...

to the OP, you want real noticeable traction gains? Stuff a 400+lb fat bitch in your hatch..trust me, she will still look better than your 240 does right now, and you will gain more traction, and a better drop.

and Im with LMmira, this thread NEEDS to go to a "hall of shame" section that NEEDS to be created, stickied, and made example of.
