Fiberglass questions
So i got a knock off rb wing for free. Of course i install it and of course fitment is poor. It's wavy where the wing meets the hatch. I could rivet it down and force it..but i think that's a terrible idea. My question to y'all is could i reshape it down. Like maybe heat gun or something?

Again like i said it's not far off, maybe 1/4" at most, but it could be better.

You should be able to add more fiberglass and sand it into shape, or just sand it into place. I only messed with fiberglass about 10 years ago and was not a fan of the smell and chemicals involved, so I avoided it as a plague.

I would sand it and level it. Playing with fiberglass sucks. You could also find some rubber gasket material and trim it to fit between the wing and the trunk.

So should i rivet it to the hatch to close the gap then fiberglass whatever breaks

Or fiberglass the new stuff to the hatch, which would still leave it wavy but it be less noticeable because there aren't any gaps

if you are going to fiberglass, you should fix the end of the wing. Fiberglass the end the is short and wavy so that it is at the right height, level and contour.

It would be easier fill the gap with plastic filler, or bondo (ugh) maybe. I would go the route I mentioned which is a rubber gasket between the two. Would hide the imperfections and fill your gap.

Could you link this rubber gasket material y'all keep mentioning? I'm not familiar with the product y'allspeak of

Something like that. You can trace, cut and fill your gap.

...let it sit in the sun all day. Now the is wing not as stiff....gonna add more rivets and call it a day, because it does not feel like it will break anymore. Will report back (most likely with failure. hahahahaha)

jackasspyro2 05-17-2016 09:43 PM

No thank you. Like dragon called me out on I'll most likely have it multi colored forever. Haha

XMcEvilson 05-18-2016 02:20 AM

lol there should be s-chassis meets where we trade panels if someone has a better match

jackasspyro2 05-18-2016 10:11 AM

This honestly sounds like the greatest idea ever. Why is that not a thing!!!

Playing with fiberglass....
Advice for playing with fiberglass. Use clear packaging tape and saran wrap to mask off areas you don't want glue sticking to. Get a variable speed polisher and very coarse sand paper on it, keep the speed slow and the coarse grit will cut the fibers instead of just busting out the resin. Cut out more than you think you should(feather) and put more glass down than you need. Knock it down with the polisher and finish it with bondo.

OR, if you don't mind investing some time into the POS you could do the following...,

-Make a fiberglass mold of the piece of shit knock off wing
-Pour RTV cast into the mold and wait
-take you're new super flexible wing and put it on the trunk where you want it. (it'll bend along with the trunk lid line perfectly)
-make a new fiber glass mold with it on the trunk
-put the mold to the side and then make a mold of the trunk lid
-At this point you should have two molds, trunk lid mold and the ugly ass wing mold. now make a part from each mold.
-Take both parts and glue them together with 3m epoxy glue, then you cut the edges till its in the correct shape. then sand edges. once you have both parts finally together you can clean up the edges with some resin and sand to a smooth finish.

If you take the time to do all that you'll have an ugly ass ricer wing that fits better than something OEM.
